Inventory: The 4 Star Sprocket

Starting a sprocket from scratch for us is a distinctive process. The process begins with a mix of sketches on paper, the sprocket is then taken onto the computer and crafted in 3D software until we have a workable design. After we’ve done the initial design and have received the first prototype, the Sprocket then enters the testing phase to ensure that it performs correctly and can hold up to the extreme forces and abuse that is involved with riding BMX. If any are needed, changes are then made to the sprocket and then a new prototype is put through testing again until we are 100% happy with the final design, and it can then go into production.

Besides the strength we believe that one of the most important features of a sprocket should be the appearance, if you stand back and look at your bike then you will notice that the sprocket acts as a focal point, your eyes are instinctively drawn to that inner circular mechanism that is so essential to how you ride. Over time we have seen a lot of sprockets that look stunning, but when you put them on your bike they don’t seem to hold the same aesthetic value they did on their own. This is something at WETHEPEOPLE we really think hard about.

Over time we have seen a lot of sprockets that look stunning, but when you put them on your bike they don’t seem to hold the same aesthetic value they did on their own.

The 4 Star Sprocket is a simple 4 spoke design with a rubust 6.35mm thick 6061-T6 alloy construction that is made to fit directly onto a 24mm crank spindle, yet still work equally as good on a 19 or 22mm crank. The 4 Star came about because we needed a simple, strong and clean sprocket. We already had the Turmoil (5 spoke) in the range and we had just added the Patrol (6 spoke) so we felt we needed something to sit in that gap. Offering something for everyone is important we feel, as BMX is such a custom and individual sport in so many ways.

What really makes the 4 Star a unique sprocket is how carefully we balanced the thickness and the machining of the alloy.

What really makes the 4 Star a unique sprocket is how carefully we balanced the thickness and the machining of the alloy. Even though weighing in as our lightest sprocket yet, the 4 Star has plenty of material where it counts around the outer ring, around the sprocket bolt area (with very large radius sunken "gussets" to make for a very strong sprocket hole) and around the axle. This makes it a very durable, but still lightweight sprocket.

As with all of our sprockets, the 4 Star uses an offset tooth profile towards the inside for a better chain line. This is something that can drastically improve the drivetrain on your bike, and something that most riders overlook when picking a new sprocket.

The sprocket of choice for Felix Prangenberg, Ed Zunda, and most of the WTP PRO team; the 4 Star is the perfect balance between weight and durability. If you're looking for a simple, yet well thought out sprocket that's going to last, look no further...
